Budget Planning Guide

Monthly Budget Planning & Threshold Alerts

Learn how to set realistic spending ceilings for your home, prevent impulse purchases with visual alerts, and build lasting financial discipline.

Guardrails, Not Restrictions

Traditional budgeting often feels punitive: cutting out every coffee, dining experience, or weekend treat. When budgets are too strict, family members abandon them within two weeks.

SFFM approaches budgeting through flexible category guardrails. Instead of policing individual purchases, you allocate a monthly spending ceiling for each category (e.g., ₹18,000 for Groceries, ₹6,000 for Dining Out, ₹4,500 for Electricity & Utilities). The whole family knows the ceiling, and real-time progress meters keep everyone informed before overspending happens.

Applying the 50/30/20 Rule to Indian Households

50% Needs

Essential survival and non-negotiables: House rent / Home Loan EMI, groceries, children's school tuition, electricity, health insurance, and medicines.

30% Wants

Lifestyle and discretionary spending: Dining out, weekend movies, shopping, streaming subscriptions, vacations, and personal hobbies.

20% Savings

Future security: Emergency cash reserves (3-6 months), Mutual Fund SIPs, PPF contributions, Sovereign Gold Bonds, and debt pre-payments.

How SFFM's Visual Progress Meters Work

On your SFFM Dashboard and Category Budgets tab, each category displays a dynamic utilization meter calculated automatically from live database entries:

0% to 70% — Healthy Green: Spending is well within planned parameters. No action needed.
71% to 90% — Caution Amber: Approaching monthly ceiling. Family members receive a subtle cue to defer non-essential purchases in this category.
> 100% — Alert Crimson: Limit exceeded. Highlights the exact overage amount so the household can adjust spending in other discretionary categories.
